Web Developer — Part-Time Contract

About MidCurrent

MidCurrent is the largest independent fly-fishing media brand on the web, publishing daily editorial content to an audience of serious anglers. We also operate MidCurrent Travel (a fly-fishing travel business) and MidCurrent Plus , a subscription membership launched in early 2026 that delivers personalized newsletters, regional monthly guides, and gated content.

We're a small team. You'll be our go-to technology partner, with the goal of expanding your responsibilities as the business grows. You need to be a strong team player who comes up with creative solutions that will help us execute.

The Role

We're looking for an experienced web developer to take ownership of MidCurrent's web properties. The work splits roughly into three buckets:

Website development (~55%). Content updates, landing pages, plugin and platform maintenance, broken links and redirects, tracking and analytics integrity, DNS and hosting administration, and fast turnaround on the small things that pile up. You'll also lead the integration of AI tools into our website and content workflows.

Own the tech side of our sales funnels (~35%). MidCurrent Travel, with sales run through HubSpot, is our priority business; MidCurrent Plus runs on WordPress + Memberful. Ad sales managed via Google Ad Manager are also a core part of our business. For Travel, you'll provide tech support on the HubSpot side of the business: forms, lead capture and routing, tracking, and the landing pages that feed the sales team. For membership, you'll build and refine gated content flows, paywall states, member onboarding pages, account management UX, and the integrations that connect membership status to our email platform. Travel and membership are where our revenue growth is, and where most of the near-term build work lives.

Business tech stack management (~10%). Keep the tools the team relies on every day working smoothly: Google Workspace administration (accounts, permissions, shared drives), email setup and deliverability, payment systems, and the other platforms behind daily operations. You'll be the first call when something breaks and the person who keeps access, security, and vendor accounts in order.

The exact mix is negotiable and will shift over time. If you're strong in one bucket and thin in another, tell us — we'd rather know than guess.

What You'll Own

• midcurrent.com — WordPress on Flywheel. Custom theme.
• MidCurrent Plus membership — WordPress + Memberful. Gated content, paywall templates, role mapping, subscription state handling.
• Ad delivery — Google Publisher Tags. Ad revenue is real revenue; breaking it is expensive.
• Analytics and tracking — GA4, Google Tag Manager, conversion tracking across properties. Historically this has been unreliable and we need it trustworthy.
• Infrastructure and access — Cloudflare DNS, GoDaddy registrar, AWS (S3, Lightsail), GitHub org, Google Workspace administration, DeployHQ.
• HubSpot — Marketing Hub and Sales Hub Enterprise (~70k contacts). Website integration, forms, lead routing. You won't own HubSpot strategy, but you'll own the tech stack side of things.

You will also be the gatekeeper for credentials and access across all digital accounts. We need someone we can trust with the keys.

Required Experience

• 5+ years building and maintaining production WordPress sites, including custom theme and plugin development — not just page builders.
• Demonstrated ability to work with custom themes .
• JavaScript and PHP proficiency .
• AI and LLM experience — hands-on work with LLMs and AI coding environments (Claude Code, Codex, or similar), plus working knowledge of AI project management.
• Git-based deployment workflows — GitHub, staging and production environments, safe rollbacks.
• Managed WordPress hosting experience (WP Engine, Flywheel, or equivalent) and comfort with DNS, SSL, redirects, and server migrations.
• Membership and paywall implementation experience — Memberful, MemberPress, WooCommerce Subscriptions, or similar.
• GA4 and Google Tag Manager — you can diagnose why tracking is wrong, not just install a snippet.
• Performance and Core Web Vitals work on content-heavy, ad-supported sites.
• Clear written communication and self-directed project management, alongside issue tracking and changelogs. We will not be managing your day.
• Design sensibility — you don't need to be a designer, but you should recognize when something looks wrong

Nice to Have

• A track record of shipping AI-powered tools or automations in production — content pipelines, CMS or CRM integrations, or agent-based workflows
• HubSpot integration experience (forms, workflows, custom objects, website tracking)
• Google Publisher Tags / ad ops
• Email platform integrations (Klaviyo preferred) and deliverability basics
• Solid design skills and experience improving UI and UX in a consumer-facing business
• Genuine interest in fly fishing or the outdoor industry

Working Arrangement

• Flat monthly retainer of $1,700–$2,500 USD set by experience. Invoiced monthly; we pay net 15.
• ~5–8 hours per week (roughly 20–35 hours per month), scheduled at your discretion. We need dependable weekly availability and same-day response to true emergencies: the site is down, or payments or ad delivery are broken.
• A short weekly check-in (a 30-minute call or a written update), plus occasional technical planning discussions.
• Work beyond the retainer's scope is billed hourly, only when approved in advance.
• Your own equipment and software.
• We're open to a 3-month initial engagement to make sure the fit is right in both directions, converting to ongoing.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a paid, scoped trial task (approximately 4 hours, flat fee) before we make an offer.
